Creative Middle School Vocabulary Lesson – English Language Arts

Sharing an easy, almost no-prep activity idea!

➡️ALL IN ONE Vocabulary Challenge ⬅️

Students work in groups for this activity. Groups of 3-4 students work best.

*GIVE each group of list of 10-15 vocabulary words from novel, unit, or other reading . Each group should have access to a dictionary if they have not already learned the meaning of the words.

*CHALLENGE groups to write one sentence using as many of the words correctly as possible in the sentence. The sentence should be related to the reading in some way. Once students have used as many words as possible, they may write a second or third sentence until all the words have been used.

*MONITOR student progress to ensure accuracy of word usage.

*STUDENTS display their sentence(s) on white boards, the classroom blackboard, or on drawing paper depending on what you have available.

*GROUPS share the sentences with the class in a gallery walk or present in front of the class.

Great for practice working collaboratively, monitoring understanding of text, knowledge of vocabulary, writing in complete sentences or specific sentence structures.

The other cool thing about this is that it allows you to grab a few teachable moments with parts of speech since some words will need an -ed or an -ing based on how the students are using them. Plus, it’s really creative to let students sort of “play” with the words and create new sentences together.

I could see collaboration on the Chrome Books with a shared Google doc or slides. Then I would project each group’s work on my projector from Google Classroom!
